A Guide to Home Care in New Zealand

Abode is a boutique provider of private home care services in New Zealand. We operate on the ‘Abode Standard,’ a commitment to high-quality, nurse-led oversight and consistency. Unlike large-scale agencies, we prioritise the relationship between the client and the caregiver. By ensuring a consistent rotation of familiar nurses and caregivers, we provide more than just assistance, we provide companionship and medical or home help plans tailored to the individual.

How do we deliver our in-home care services?

Our care is nurse-led, meaning a registered nurse provides ongoing oversight and regular reviews of care plans, ensuring the service evolves alongside the client's health status.

Every Abode caregiver undergoes a thorough screening and assessment process to ensure they possess both the technical skills and the personability required for our private home service.

There are several key components to our in-home care services that are each tailored to the individual. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Personal Care: Assistance with daily activities (ADLs), including showering, bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and continence management.
  • Mobility Support: Helping individuals move safely around their home, including getting in and out of bed or chairs.
  • Household Help (Homemaking): Light cleaning, laundry, vacuuming, ironing, and tidying to maintain a safe environment.
  • Meal Preparation: Planning, cooking, and serving meals, including "heat and eat" options.
  • Medication Management: Reminders to take medication on time.
  • Companionship & Social Support: Friendly visits, engaging in conversation, and participating in activities to reduce loneliness.
  • Transportation & Errands: Transport to appointments, shopping for groceries, or picking up prescriptions.

What are the benefits of in-home care?

Choosing private care in New Zealand allows individuals to maintain their independence without the trouble of moving to a residential facility. By bringing professional support into the home, we eliminate the institutional feel of aged care, allowing a lifestyle led by the client's preferences rather than a facility's schedule.

Pop-In Home Care

Clients stay in familiar surroundings with their own pets, gardens, and routines.

Post-Operative Care

Relatives can return to being family members rather than full-time carers, knowing professionals are managing daily needs.

Palliative Care

Unlike a rest home schedule, care is delivered on the client’s timeline.

  • Seniors: Those wishing to age in familiar surroundings rather than transition to a rest home.
  • Individuals with Chronic Illnesses: Patients requiring regular medical monitoring or private nursing care at home.
  • Post-Operative Patients: Those needing short-term elderly assistance during a 4-6 week recovery window.
  • Respite for Family Carers: Providing overnight care to prevent primary caregiver burnout.

Government funded vs private in-home care

In New Zealand, the public system (Te Whatu Ora) uses Needs Assessment Service Coordination (NASC) to determine eligibility for funded help. While this provides essential support, it often comes with limitations regarding the choice of carer and strict time caps.

Families choose Abode for private care to bridge these gaps. Private care offers no waitlists, the ability to select your specific caregiver, and the flexibility to request longer visits that cover social needs, not just basic hygiene

What are the cost factors of private in-home care services?

Home care service costs are determined by the client's specific needs, the frequency of visits, and the client's location. We believe in transparent pricing that reflects the high level of clinical care and the specialised skills of our nursing staff. A few factors to consider include:

  • Levels of Care: A pop-in visit carries a different rate than a registered nurse performing complex wound care.
  • Palliative and Nursing Care: These require higher clinical qualifications and are priced accordingly.
  • Management: Families often manage costs by combining government-funded hours with private top-ups to ensure 24/7 safety without the full cost of private care.

How do I schedule in-home care services for my family?

Starting your journey with Abode is quick and easy, designed to relieve stress and provide immediate clarity for your family. From the first point of contact, our goal is to understand your unique situation and arrange a professional team that fits your requirements perfectly.

01

Enquiry

Contact us to discuss your immediate needs and ask any initial questions you may have regarding our services or pricing.

02

Assessment

A registered nurse visits the home to conduct a clinical assessment and create a bespoke care plan tailored to the individual’s health requirements and lifestyle.

03

Matching

We select a local nurse or caregiver whose personality, clinical expertise, and schedule align with the client’s needs. This helps to ensure a genuine connection between the client and their dedicated care team.

We can often facilitate care on short notice, particularly for post-operative or palliative situations in Auckland and Christchurch.
